A rotary switch connects several devices to an electric source the electricity enters the rotary switch's input terminal and the switch sends electricity to the output terminal selected some rotary switches contain more than one circuit these contain two or more input terminals, called "poles,". A simple and cheapest method to read a rotary bcd switch is to wire the common to ground and wire the 4 switch bits (8421) to 4 arduino input pins and then enable the optional internal pull-up resistors for those pins.. That is, if switch is set at 1, then common is connected to switch terminal 1. if 2, then common is connected to terminal 2. the challenge is for numbers such as 3, where terminal 1 and 2 are connected to common, that is 1 and 2 are in parallel. there is no way to create a decade resistance box with standard bcd rotary switches!.
